英語の読み書きの学びの広がり – 多感覚を用いて –
Harbourfront International Schoolの幼稚園(Kindergarten)の年齢より下の、Preschoolの生徒は、日々のクラスの中で数字や色、形といった英語の基本的な単語を学ぶのと同時に「Phonicsフォニックス」という方法を使って英語を学んでいます。Phonicsとは、英語の「音」に焦点を当てた、発音の規則性を学びながら英語の読み方を習得する方法です。例えばPhonics では、文字の「名前」a, b, c（エー、ビー、シー）ではなく、文字の「音」を覚えます。これは英語圏のお子さまが幼い頃に英語を学ぶときに使われている学び方となり、自然に英語を身につけることができる方法のひとつです。
覚え方ひとつにも様々な方法があります。HarbourfrontではJolly Phonics(ジョリーフォニックス)というプログラムの中の歌を聴きながら、ひとつずつの文字にあるそれぞれの歌（聴覚）、体を使ったアクション(運動感覚)、なぞり文字（触覚）、文字と絵柄(視覚)を見るといったいろいろな感覚を刺激しながら、それらを日々の中で遊び感覚で繰り返し取り入れ、自然に身につくことができるようにしています。生徒の年齢が大きくなって読み書きを学ぶ際には、紙と鉛筆以外にも、ホワイトボードやマグネットを使ったお絵描きボードを使って文字を書いたり、粘土を使用して文字を形作ったりといった様々な方法を取り入れています。そしてHarbourfrontの先生は、常に新しく楽しい学びの方法がないかアンテナを張り巡らしています。

この中では、アルファベットを形作ったクッキーを食べることも、お子さまが楽しく学ぶことにつながると、味覚からの学びの広がりが紹介されており、また匂いのあるシールを使って、嗅覚を用いて匂いと記憶を連動した単語帳を作ることも提案されています。
Harbourfront International Schoolでは、お子さまが学んでいるという意識なく、楽しく学びを深めていく姿が一番重要であり目指す姿です。いろいろな感覚を使って、それぞれのお子さまにとって最適な学びを得ることができるように選択の場を広げていくことも、スクールの役割と考えています。
At Harbourfront International School, Preschool students, who are aged between 1 and 2, start learning everyday English, such as numbers, colours, or shapes in class. They also learn English with Phonics, which focuses on the pronunciation of letters and blends. The students learn the "sounds" of letters, rather than the name of the letter. Phonics is one of the most commonly used ways for children to learn in English-speaking countries.
In order to learn and remember letters, there are many different ways. At Harbourfront, we often use songs in a program called Jolly Phonics. In this program, there are songs, actions, and letter-tracing activities for each letter of the alphabet. In this way, the students learn letters by hearing, kinaesthetically, or via touching. There are also pictures to go along with each letter. All of these multi-sensory activities stimulate students repeatedly at Harbourfront everyday. For students, these activities brighten up their daily routine.
As students get older and become Kindergarten students, they learn to read and write. In addition to paper and pencil, the students use whiteboards and magnetic-drawing-boards to write letters, or use clay to shape letters. Teachers at Harbourfront seek for other materials to find new and fun ways for the students to learn in an exiting way.

In this study, eating alphabet-shaped cookies also leads to fun learning methods for children, and the expansion of learning from taste is introduced. It was also proposed in the study to create a word book with scented stickers that links memories with a scent for each letter in the alphabet.
At Harbourfront International School, we believe the most important way for children to learn is that children need to deepen their learning without being aware that they are learning. One of the roles of the school is to use various senses to expand their field of choice, so that each child can obtain the best, and the most exciting learning experience possible.
